Job Description

The Development and Communication Director will create, implement and oversee the exploring of recourses as per the strategic plan which may include proposal writing to donors based on the AIRD strategic plan, along with planning for major gifts, corporate donations, grant solicitation, and in-kind resources. The Development and Communication Director will also be responsible for exploring and implementing non-traditional fundraising opportunities which may include establishing social or commercial enterprises and/or a foundation. Lastly, the Development and Communication Director will be responsible for the communication strategy for the organization and implementation of the same. Duties and responsibilities include;
Traditional Funding Sources - Plan and implement fundraising activities
• Collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer and the Senior Management team to create a resource mobilization plan in line with AIRDs current Strategic Plan which increases donor funds to support the strategic direction of the organization
• Implement and manage the resources mobilization plan in accordance with ethical fundraising principles
• Monitor and evaluate all activities to ensure that the fundraising goals are being achieved and provide the necessary reports as agreed
• Monitor trends in the community or region and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary
• Oversees the development of the communications including the website, newsletters, annual report, press releases, and appeals
• The ability to write grants/appeals independently is necessary along with identifying and cultivating both established and new contacts and foundations, developing proposals and overseeing annual reports
• Work with the Country Program Directors to see what opportunities may be available in our countries of operations regarding traditional and nontraditional donors

Non-Traditional Funding Sources - Plan and implement income generating activities
• With the potential assistance of consultant(s) take the lead in exploring income generating activities that would allow AIRD to fund its development activities (the non-traditional activities could be based in any of the countries AIRD operates in)
• Non-traditional funding sources could include looking at business opportunities – social enterprises or for profit commercial business or establishing a foundation
• Ensure due diligence has been done for all proposed projects including but not limited to reviewing legal implications, business plans which outline investment required and return on investment duration along with risk of business proposed

Promote the organization
• Foster an understanding of philanthropy within the organization
• Develop a comprehensive communication plan to promote the organization to its donors and maximize public awareness of the resource mobilization activities of the organization
• Coordinate the design, printing and distribution of marketing and communication materials for development efforts
• Build relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization

Organize fund development activities
• Develop and manage timelines for various activities to ensure strategic plans and critical fund raising processes are carried out in a timely manner
• Develop policies and procedures for the development department which reflect ethical fundraising practices
• Prepare and submit grant applications as outlined in the fund development plan to generate funds for the organization
• Oversee the planning and execution of special fundraising events as specified in the fundraising plan to generate funds for the organization
• Identify and develop corporate, community and individual prospects for the organization's fundraising priorities
• Oversee the administration of a donor mailing list and database which respects the privacy and confidentiality of donor information
• Coordinate in-kind donations and make decisions regarding the issuing of receipts

Staff fund development activities
• In consultation with the Chief Executive Officer, recruit, interview, and select well-qualified staff for the department as may be necessary
• Engage volunteers for special fund development projects using established volunteer management practices

Manage fund development budget
• Develop and gain approval for an annual income and expenditure budget for the development program department
• Prepare regular reports on progress, budgets, receipts and expenditure related to resource mobilization and fundraising activities
• Monitor expenses and analyze budget reports on fund development and recommend changes as necessary

Position Requirements

Education
• Master’s degree in related subject
• A certificate in Fundraising and Resources Mobilization Management

Professional designation
• Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation is an asset

Knowledge, skills and abilities
• Minimum 5 years proven professional experience at a senior level with solid experience in both traditional and non-tradition funding sources along with communication
• Must have good a good network within the funding community and knows how large funders such as DFID, USAID, SIDA work in development along with philanthropic funders
• Experience in business development with the ability to function entrepreneurially and identify new prospects and create new funding relationships. This is not a position in which the funding is already-identified renewals that carry over year-to-year. The entire budget must be raised anew each year, and we require a candidate that does not shy away from that challenge
• Experience in the humanitarian and development field is necessary and also business exposure
• Experience leading all aspects of development, with special emphasis on major donor campaigns
• Experience with successful corporate appeals, event planning, direct mail, foundation approaches
• Exceptional writing and public speaking skills
• Ability to work effectively and independently outside a traditional office setting without support staff and with minimal supervision
• Highly organized
• Extensive experience leading development campaigns, volunteers, committees, and development staff
• Knowledge of relevant fundraising standards
• Ability to meet deadlines, manage competing priorities and maintain quality of work

Proficiency in the use of computer for:
